NEVADA CITY HISTORY EARLY HISTORY Two yeors before the gold rush of 1849, James Wilson Marshall . and a party of emigrants stopped on Deer Creek in what was to ~ . become Nevoda City. Morshall panned and discovered gold ~ flakes. The find did not seem important to him so he moved on to Colona where gold was discovered in January 1949, Within two years the creek thet Marshall passed by developed into the creek that Marshall passed by developed into the richest mining stream in Nevada County. Over 5,000 men were mining Deer Creek in 1849. Over $378 000,000 worth of gold was recovered in Nevada County by these early miners and those that followed. In October 1849 Dr. A. B. Caldwell built a crude log hut in the general area that is now the Plaza. The location became. known as Caldwell's Upper Store or Deer Creek Dry Diggins. In 1850 a boarding house was opened by Madame Penn. Other: structures soon followed and in helter aleliet fashion: were built _ along Deer Creek. : : ~t A new interest in civic affairs culminated in an election held under Mexican law to elect an Alcalde, Mr. Stamps. The dusty young mining town was in need of an authority to punish claim E jumpers, murderers and thieves. As a part of the election, the ‘townspeople changed the name of their city. Since the mountains a3 prs packed with snow, Nevada, meaning snow in Spanish was chosen. : ae Nevada was incorporated in 1853 but in 1856 the Supreme Court _. declared the law under which the city was incorporated unconsti. tuitional. The laws were changed and the town was again incor.. porated by an act of the legislature. One more event was to take . place before the town became known_as "Nevada City". William “<1 Morris Stewart, Nevada's first district attorney, moved to. Washoe 4 Territory and became the first U. S$. Senator when it became a “. state. He took along with him the name "Nevada" and the Wasi hoe Territory became known as the state of Nevada. The townspeople, to avoid confusion, changed their name to Nevada City.
