FOREWARD This first small part of "A Family History of California" has been a long time in the writing. My aim was to tell the story as much as possible in the words of each period through records in letters, diaries, newspaper articles and other contemporary material. The complete work will reflect the development of California over the last 130 years. Tne’ biographical history finally achieved its present form through the patience and persistence of Charlie Smith who had a good idea at the right time. Here is how he describes his involvement with the book: After reading her many letters to the editor, seeing her many times at meetings, and in general becoming aware of her many interests, it was only natural that I should suggest that Catherine Webb should write her memoirs. How surprized I was when she agreed! Little did I know how well prepared she was to record her life. Starting in the Fall of 1973 we began having more or less regular Sunday evening sessions with two tape recorders. Each week Catherine had from 22 to 27 pages of typed material ready to read. My role was to take notes for a summary of each tape. Once in a while at the end of each session there would be time left on the tapes for further discussion. A point which should be made is that these first pages are just the tip of the iceberg (Seven out of Fifty Chapters). It has been a fun project and I am glad to have had a small part ah) ahter, As Charlie discovered, the project coveres more than my personal Memoirs. This particular bit ends in 1911. History, social changes and family adventures are recorded up to 1972. To prepare this bit for the celebration of my seventieth birthday, Charlie and I left off with the recordings in a story about the 1972 battle to preserve the wild, natural areas of Albany Hill. Those who can't wait to read about such adventures until further printings might ask for permission to see the material which Charlie and I have prepared for the Bancroft Library. I must give a special thanks to my sister, Elizabeth, whose faithful letter writing has chronicled the thread of family life in important details which I am inclined to forget. iii.
