Mr. Chabot was of a very modest ‘ retiring nature So did not wish his name mentioned in connection with his pift. But ‘an admiring public did not heed his wish and gave the building the name "Chabot Cottage", he name of ‘Anthony Chabot was always among the first on the list wh enever’ money was necded for charitable purposes. In 1883 he gave one of his Rhee gifts to Oakland, an observatory loceted in Lafayette Park, at Tenth, Eleventh, Jefferson, and Grove Strects. It is now umer the control of the Board of Education. In 1916 the location of the ooserattavet ari: to vatory was. changed from Letayette Park 4917 Mountain Boulevard, Leona Heights. The instruments trom the original building, a new twenty-inch refracting teleScope, as well as other modern apparatus, were installed in the new observatory. This equipment was made possible by a benefaction of ten thousand dollars, provided by Mr. Chabot,
