Retail Seminar: A
CSreat Success
The retailers of Nevada
County came away with some
excellent advice from professional speaker Chris Lytle’s retailing seminar. The seminar,
presented by the Grass Valley/
Nevada County Chamber of Commerce, was informative and very
well attended.
Mr. Lytle, a speaker from the
Advisory Board, a Wisconsin
based advertising and retail consulting firm, has an extensive
background in retailing and marketing. He packed the two and a
half hour seminar with information vital to retailers. His humor,
wit and story telling captivated
the audience. One of the main
points in his seminar was to let
the audience know that it’s the

little things that count. Each of
us came away with the knowledge that it’s the people and customer service attitudes that sell
our business, goods and services.
Over 200 local retailers and
their employees came away with
a work book full of helpful hints
on customer service, effective
advertising, closing sales and
handling complaints.
After reviewing the surveys
taken at the end of each seminar,
over 90% of the retailers attending said, “The seminar was an
excellent value, well worth the
$35.00 investment.” The chamber retail committee also received
some good ideas for future seminars.

This year the Grass Valley/
Nevada County Chamber of Commerce Retail Committee has accomplished quite a bit! Funded
by the Chamber and PG and E.,
we have stretched our $4000.00
budget to the limit.
Since the beginning of
January we have met ona regular
basis to plan our activities for
this year. Our broad objectives
were: To increase local retail
sales. Increase the number of
local residents who shop locally.
Continue the retail speakers bureau. :
Our specific goals: Hold
one dynamic and professional
seminar. Increase awareness of
goods and services in our area.
I’m pleased to say we have
met and are currently meeting
those goals. In September we
held the “Successful Retailing
Seminar” which was a great success. Plans are under way to start
a consumer hotline in Nevada
County so people can call the
find out were they can buy specific good and services, and we
are getting under way with our
shop local campaign, featuring
radio and newspaper advertising
to run for the Holiday Season.
We feel that is absolutely
vital our local population support
and shop at home. Keeping our
tax dollars here and creating a
work place for our residents will
keep Nevada County healthy and
economically sound.
Next year Lisa Swarthout
will be taking over the leadership
for the Retail Committee, and we
are looking forward to another
successful year.
Sue Casto is the Owner of
Leathers and Treasures and has
been the chairperson of the retail
committee for the last two years.
