By Jean Lund, Chairperson, Membership Services
Committee, GV/NC Chamber of Commerce :
The membership services
committee, better known as the
“Ambassadors,” has been very
active this year. The whole purpose of the committee needed
revision from years past, primarily to meet the growing needs
of the Chamber members themselves. The members wanted
more contact with the Chamber
and the Chamber wanted more
members as well. To be a
healthy, viable Chamber, in any
market, the membership is the
most important element to its
success.
To attempt to meet the
needs, as Chairperson, I concluded that we (the Chamber)
needed to be more visible and
assessable. In the past, the function of the Ambassador Committee was to attend ribbon cuttings, mixers, and help in the
annual membership drive. Because our membership was not
growing as it should have been

tion growth of the county, we
(the Board) knew that a change
had to be made; we needed continual membership growth, not
sporadic. The Ambassadors
seemed to be the key to accomplishing the growth needed.
We began last February
with ten or so Chamber volunteers, known as the “Ambassadors” visiting businesses on a
weekly basis, every Tuesday at
noon. The purposes of these
visitations are multifaceted; we
thank them for being a member
and ask how we can further serve
their needs, we ask them to become a member, or we ask them
to rejoin. We inform them of
upcoming chamber events,
present membership plaques,
and invite them to become interested in any one of the dynamic Chamber committees. We
get a short tour, and off we go
to visit another business. To
date, we have visited close to
100 businesses. Our memberaii

ship goal is being achieved as
we are over the 600 figure we
were striving for this year. The
best news is that we have seventeen active Ambassadors that are
committed to helping the Chamber become as strong as the
Board of Directors hoped it
would be, and we have strengthened our ties with the business
community through our visitations and our follow-up contacts.
