C’ounty Requires Businesses to Register
Under a recent ordinance approved by the Nevada County
Board of Supervisors, all businesses operating within the unincorporated areas of Nevada
County will be required to register with the County by March 1,
1992. The new law includes businesses that are conducted from a
residential location.
The ordinance requires that
all new businesses file with the
County within 120 days of qualifying as a business. Filings for
existing businesses that are completed by the March 1 deadline
will cost $25.00 per business. A
penalty of four times the normal
registration cost will be imposed
for late filings.
In addition to the initial filings, businesses will be required
to submit amended registrations
whenever an enterprise is sold or
transfers
ownership.
The
amended forms must be completed within 90 days of the
change. Any changes to statisti
cal data provided on the initial
form will also necessitate the filing of an amended registration
form. Amended forms must be

Businesses having gross revenues of less than $2500.00 and
businesses governed under the
“Hawkers and Peddlers” ordinance are exempt from the registration ordinance. Farming and
agriculture businesses are also
exempt. Exemption can be obtained by providing supporting
evidence to the Nevada County
Treasurer’s office.
Business owners should remember that the issuance of a
business registration certificate is
not a substitute for any other permits required by the Nevada
County Land Use and Develop
ment Code. Prior to establishing
a land use or business in Nevada
County, compliance with all pertinent chapters of this code is
required.
Questions concerning required land use permits should
be directed to the applicable
county departments: Planning
Department, 265-1440; Building
Inspection, 265-1444; Environmental Health, 265-1452 and
Transportation Department, 2651411. Questions concerning the
registration process should be
directed to the Treasurer’s office
at 265-1285.
Businesses within the city
limits of Grass Valley or Nevada
City will not be required to register with the County but must
continue to follow the licensing
rules for the city in which they
operate. Answers to questions
about licensure in the cities can
be obtained by calling 273-2241
in Grass Valley and 265-2496 for
Nevada City.
