FIRST MILITARY FLYING SCHOOL IN AMERICA
The flat lands beyond have been a part of aviation history since
818 Glenn Curtiss founded the first military flying school in America
on January 17, 1911. The Army operated Rockwell Field until
January 31, 1939. The Navy commissioned the present air station
on November 8, 1917.

HUDSON'S BAY COMPANY HEADQUARTERS
On this block, then on Yerba Buena’s waterfront, stood the Cali819 fornia headquarters of the Hudson’s Bay Company. In 1841, their
chief trader, William G. Tae, purchased the property and started
operations. This venture caused wide speculation about British
intentions. Inadequate profits, a declining fur catch, and pressure
of U.S. expansion caused Hudson’s Bay Company to end California operations.

ST. TERESA’S CHURCH
Constructed of redwood in 1859 by New England ship’s carpen820 ters on Spanish land grant donated by Jasper O'Farrell. On
March 8, 1860, Father Louis Rossi was appointed pastor. Archbishop Alemany dedicated the church in the Town of Bodega on
June 2, 1861, and it has served this coastal community continuously for over a century.

MORRO ROCK
An important mariner’s navigational landfall for over 300 years,
821 Chronicled in the diaries of Portoli, Fr. Crespi, and Costansé in
1769 when they camped near this area on their trek to find Monterey. Sometimes called the “Gibraltar of the Pacific,” it is the
last in the famous chain of nine peaks which start in the City of
San Luis Obispo.
