SITE OF COLLEGE OF CALIFORNIA
University of California, chartered March 23, 1868. Located be45 tween Franklin and Harrison, 12th and 14th Streets, from 1869 to
1873, using buildings of former College of California, successor
to Contra Costa Academy founded by Henry Durant, June 1853.
He was elected first university president in June 1870. University
moved to present Berkeley site September 1873.

VALLEJO FLOUR MILL
This is the site of the flour mill buile in 1853 by José de Jesus
46 Vallejo, brother of General M. G. Vallejo, on his Rancho Arroyo de la Alameda. Niles was once called “Vallejo Mills.”

ANZA EXPEDITION CAMP
Here on the banks of San Mateo Creek Captain J. B. de Anza
47 camped March 29, 1776, after exploring the peninsula and selecting the sites for the Mission and Presidio of San Francisco.
Here also the party of families, soldiers, and priests, on their way
to establish San Francisco, camped for three days, June 2427,
1776.

The Anza Expedition of 1776 on its way UP the peninsula to
48 locate sites for the Presidio and Mission of San Francisco campe
here on March 26 at a dry watercourse a short league beyond
Arroyo de San Mateo.

ADOBE CHAPEL OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION
In 1850 John Brown built an adobe house here and lived in it
49 for a while. He then sold the place to Don José Buconie
Aguirre, who furnished funds for its rebuilding for chure
purposes. This chapel was dedicated November 21, 1858. The
tomb of Don José Antonio Aguirre may be seen in the small
right wing of the chapel. Here Father Antonio D. Ubach,
the “Father Gaspara” of Helen Hunt Jackson’s famous novel
Ramona, officiated after 1866.

SITE OF SAN DIEGO WHALING ST. ATION
The Packard Brothers and Johnson Brothers of New England
50 during the middle years of the 19th century maintained whaling companies here. To this spot they towed their catch, cut up
the whales, tried out the blubber, coopered the oil, and shipped it.

OLD SPANISH LIGHTHOUSE
Here at Point Loma Head on the afternoon of September 28,
51 1542, Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, distinguished Portuguese navigator in the service of Spain, commanding the flagship San Salvador, made his first Alta California landfall and thus discovered
what is now the State of California. Cabrillo with his companions came ashore on Point Loma at what is now Ballast Point.
The lighthouse was constructed in 1854-55.

Constructed in 1813-1816 as part of the San Diego Mission Irri52 gation System, the first of its kind in California.

53 their home in Casa de Estudillo. This place is rich in historical
background and is often pointed out erroneously as Ramona’s
