1851, a small wooden powder
magazine. Between 1853 and
1863 Congress authorized an
expenditure of $550,000 on the
establishment and in the same
period some 15 stone and
frame buildings were constructed. The building was
first called “California Ordnance Depot,” then “Benicia
Arsenal Deport,” and finally in
the spring of 1852 “Benicia
Arsenal.” The arsenal played
an important role in all crises
from the Indian wars to our
present situations. Some of the
original buildings are in use
today. Descendants of the men
who established Benicia Arse;
nal are still living in Benicia and other parts of California.

SITE OF FORMER BENICIA BARRACKS y
Benicia Barracks, one of the first U.S. military posts in the
177 state, was established on April 30, 1849, by Lieutenant Colonel
Silas Casey in command of Companies C and G of the 2nd US.
Infantry. First buildings were erected in 1849. Abandoned as a
post April 30, 1908, and is now part of Benicia Arsenal. First
Lieutenant U. S. Grant was stationed here August 1 to November
14, 1852, also in May and June 1853.

In August 1844, the first settlers arrived at Rancho del Campo
Donner (Pioneer) Monument

178 de los Franceses. One of the company, Thomas Lindsay, built
a tule hut on what is now Lindsay Point back of the city hall
in Stockton, the first dwelling to be erected by an American
within the present city limits. In the spring of 1845, Lindsay was
killed by Indians, his hut was burned, and his stock and tools
were stolen.

CASTRO HOUSE
In the 1840’s the Castro house was built for General José Castro's
179 administrative office and to house the general’s secretary. In 1848
Castro sold the house to Patrick Breen, survivor of the ill-fated
Donner party of 1846. The Patrick family lived here for many
years.

PLAZA HOTEL
In 1813-14 a one-story adobe barracks building was erected for
180 soldiers who represented the Spanish government. In 1858
Angelo Zanetta added a second story to the building and operated it as a hotel for many years. Because San Juan Bautista
was one of the main stage stops between San Francisco and Los
Angeles, the Plaza Hotel became famous throughout California.

FREMONT PEAK
On March 6, 1846, Captain John C, Frémont built a fort here, on
181 Gabilan (Gavilan) Peak (Frémont’s Peak). He unfurled his colors
and for four days awaited the attack of a force of Californians.
The battle did not materialize by the night of March 9, and
Frémont broke camp and departed for Oregon.

TUMCO MINES
The original claim to these mines was located by. Peter Walters
