GAVIOTA PASS Here, on Christmas Day, 1846, natives and soldiers from the 248 Presidio of Santa Barbara lay in ambush for Lieutenant Colonel John C. Frémont, U.S.A., and his battalion. Advised of the plot, Frémont was guided over the San Marcos Pass by Benjamin Foxen and his son William, and captured Santa Barbara with out bloodshed. 4 miles northeast of Gaviora (Santa Barbara) OLD ADOBE WOMAN'S CLUB This adobe, among the oldest in Santa Clara Valley, was one 249 of several continuous rows of homes built in 1792-1800 as dwelEE az {fi —_ Benicia Capitol (No. 153, Solano) 48 ie lings for the Indian families of Mission Santa Clara. It links the Franciscan padres’ labors with California of today. Kifer Road and De la Cruz Boulevard, Santa Clara (Santa Clara) OLD SITES OF MISSION SANTA CLARA DE ASIS AND OLD SPANISH BRIDGE The first mission in this valley, Mission Santa Clara De Thamien, 250 was established at this site by Franciscan Padres Tomas de la Pefia and Joseph Antonio Murgdia January 17, 1777. Here, at the Indian village of So-co-is-u-ka, they erected a cross and shelter of worship and brought christianity to the Costanoan Indians. Kifer Road and De la Cruz Boulevard, Santa Clara (Santa Clara) VALLEY SPRINGS In 1885 the San Joaquin and Sierra Nevada Railroad Company 251 completed a narrow-gauge railroad from Brack’s Landing to Valley Springs. The line eventually became the property of Southern Pacific Company, and a standard-gauge line was substituted into Valley Springs. Valley Springs (Calaveras) SAN ANDREAS Settled by Mexicans in 1848 and named after Catholic parish of 252 St. Andres. First newspaper published here on September 24, 1856. Destroyed by fire June 4, 1858, and in 1863. County seat of Calaveras County since 1866. Rendezvous of Joaquin Murieta. Black Bart, notorious stage robber, tried and sent to prison from here. Noted mining camp since early days. Gold from the surrounding ancient river channels and placer mines contributed greatly to the success of the Union during the Civil War. San Andreas (Calaveras) SANDY GULCH Sandy Gulch, 1849 trading center for pioneer miners of north253 eastern Calaveras County, was named after the gulch where william and Dan Carsner found large nuggets imbedded in the Coarse sands. Water for mining was brought from middle fork.
