BECKWOURTH PASS Beckwourth Pass, elevation 5,221, is the lowest pass in the Sierra 336 Nevada Mountains. Discovered in 1851 by James P. Beckworth. Dedicated to the discoverer and the pioneers who passed along this trail. 20 miles east of Portola (Plumas) RICH BAR Gold first found here July 1850 by miners coming over moun337 tains from the Yuba Diggins. Much production during early ‘50's along this east branch of the Feather River’s north fork. Here “Dame Shirley” (Louise Amelia Knapp Smith Clappe) wrote her Letters From The California Mines, one of the foremost classics of the gold rush. Rich Bar (Plumas) SITE OF SANTA CLARA MISSION The third and last site was chosen where the Santa Clara Mission 338 church of the University of Santa Clara now stands, a site called by the Indians Gerguensun, “Walley of the Oaks.” The construction of the third mission began in 1818 and dedicated August 11, 1822. In 1851 Santa Clara College was established in the old mission buildings. The Alameda and Lexington Street, Santa Clara (Santa Clara) NEW ALMADEN MINE From this cinnabar hill the Indians used pigment for Paine. 339 Mercury mined, 1845. Gold discovery made mercury indispensible and mine became world famous. Most productive in America. Sold for $1,700,700 in 1864. 11 miles south of San Jose (Santa Clara) MISSION LA PURISIMA Established December 8, 1787, by Father Lasuén. Damaged by 340 earthquake, 1812; removed from control of Franciscans; and abandoned 1834. State and National Park Service restoring 60 major and many small structures, and water system. Only example in California of complete mission. 4 miles east of Lompoc (Santa Barbara) BODIE Gold was discovered here in 1859 by Wn. S. Bodey, after whom 341 the town was named. Once the most thriving metropolis of the Mono country, Bodie’s mines produced gold valued at more than 100 million dollars. Tough as nails, “the bad man from Bodie” still carries his guns and bowie knife down through the pages of western history. Bodie State Historic Park (Mono) SITE OF MISSION SANTA CRUZ September 25, 1791, the formal ceremony for the founding of 342 Mission La Exaltacién de la Santa Cruz was celebrated. Soon the establishment was found to be too near the river, and in the move to higher ground only the garden was left on the lower level. The first stone of Mission Santa Cruz was laid February 27, 1793, and the completed structure was dedicated in the spring of 1794. The mission was completely destroyed by the earthquakes of 1840 and 1857. In 1931 a replica of the original mission was built on Emmet Street. High and Emmet Streets, Santa Cruz (Santa Cruz) OLD STORE AT LA HONDA In the winter of 1861-62 John L. Sears settled in the mountains 343 17 miles from Redwood City. To this place he gave the name La Honda. Here he built a store that is still in use. The store Was sometimes called the “Bandit-Built Store” because he employed two newcomers to the area, Jim and Bob Younger, who afterward were Proved to be members of the James boys’ gang.
