April 15, 1899. This was also the first mail stop on the old
stage route between San Jose and Saratoga.

PATCHEN
“Mountain Charley” McKiernan, one of earliest residents of the
448 Santa Cruz Mountains, settled near here in 1850. John Martin
Schultheis and his wife homesteaded land about a mile from
here in 1852. Their home still standing (1950). The Patchen
Post Office, named for a famous racehorse, was located in this
vicinity, 1872-1920's. (Plaque is in storage.)

GLENWOOD
a Histone town founded by Charles C. Martin, who came around
orn 1847, and his wife, Hannah Carver Martin, who crossed
the isthmus. First homesteaded area in 1851 and
operated tollgate and station for stagecoaches crossing mountains. Later Maran developed lumber mill,

THE ORTEGA-VIGARE ADOBE
Erected during mission days, 1792-1805, second oldest adobe i

451 this region. Originally L shaped, it is now only half original size.
In 1859, became property of Don Jean Vigare. In early 1860's
became San Gabriel’s first bakery and was separated from mission’s lime orchard by high cactus wall.

MULE HILL
On December 7, 1846, day following the Battle of San Pasqual,
452 fought five miles east of here, General Stephen Kearny’s command while marching on San Diego was attacked by Californians. The Americans counterattacked,
occupied hill until
December 11 when march was resumed. Short of food, they ate
mule meat and named the place “Mule Hill.”

LUCAS, TURNER & CO. BANK (SHERMAN’S BANK)
William Tecumseh Sherman established the branch bank of
453 Lucas, Turner & Co. in San Francisco in 1853. He settled the
firm in their own building on the northeast corner of Jackson
and Montgomery Streets in the spring of 1854. Sherman successfully carried the bank through the financial crisis of 1855 and remained until they discontinued business 1n 1857.
