455 constructed in 1843 by Don Fernando Pacheco. Reconstructed in 1941, it is preserved as a memento of the historic past of Contra Costa County. Grant and Solano, Concord (Contra Costa) SHINGLE SPRINGS On this site the Boston-Newton Joint Stock Association en456 camped on September 26, 1849. The company left Boston April 16 and arrived at Sutter's Fort September 27, after a remarkable journey across the continent. A rich store of written records preserved by these pioneers has left for posterity a fascinating picture of the gold rush. Shingle Springs (El Dorado) INDIAN WELLS Indian waterhole on Joseph R. Walker trail of 1843 where 457 Manly-Jayhawker parties of 1849 found their first water after five days’ travel from Argus Range. During 1860’s was site of stage and freight station from Los Angeles to Coso and Cerro Gordo Mines. 4 miles north of Freeman (Kern) FORBES FLOUR MILL This is all that remains of the four-story stone flour mill built 458 in 1854 by James Alexander Forbes. The town which grew around this building was first called Forbes Mill, then Forbestown, and finally Los Gatos. Los Gatos (Santa Clara) SITE OF BRICK BUILDING OF THE FIRM OF MELLUS AND HOWARD In a building which stood on this site, known as the Mellus 459 and Howard Warehouse, erected in 1848, the Society of California Pioneers was organized August 31, 1850.
