3rd (Sacramento) Terminal. The turmtable and freight depot were at Third and Front Streets. Completion of the railroad was celebrated at Folsom on February 22, 1856. and R Streets, Sacramento SAVAGE TRADING POST 527 Here in 1849, James D. Savage established a store built of logs. He engaged in trading and mining. In spring of 1850, fearing In< dian depredations, he = moved to Mariposa Creek. In December, his store and Mission La Purisima others were pillaged and bummed) Ac welaniecbbee: (No. 340, Santa Barbara) talion was formed and Savage, elected major, went in pursuit of the tribe. Their secret hideout, Yosemite Valley, was discovered and the war brought to a quick end. Major Savage was killed by a political opponent, August 1852. 372 El Portal (Mariposa) YUCAIPA ADOBE Constructed in 1842 by Diego Sepilveda, nephew of Antonio 528 Maria Lugo, this is believed to be the oldest house in San Bernardino County. The Jand, formerly controlled by San Gabriel Mission, was part of the Rancho San Bernardino, granted to the Lugos in 1842. Later owners included John Brown, Sr., James W. Waters, and the Dunlap family, before acquisition by San Bernardino County in 1955. Yucaipa (San Bernardino) 86 HOSPITAL COVE, ANGEL ISLAND Lieutenant Juan Manuel de Ayala, commander of the San 529 Carlos, first Spanish ship to enter the Golden Gate, used this anchorage as his base in the exploration of San Francisco Bay in August and September 1775. Named by him “Nuestra Sefiora de Los Angeles,” this island later became a center for U.S. military and immigration activities. Hospital Cove, established as a state park in 1954, was for many years the quarantine station for the U.S. Public Health Service. San Francisco Bay (Marin) GOLD DISCOVERY SITE STATE PARK This rock monument marks the site of John A. Sutter’s sawmill 530 in the tailrace of which James W. Marshall discovered gold January 24, 1848, starting great rush of argonauts to California. The Society of California Pioneers definitely located and marked site in 1924. Additional timbers and relics, including original tailrace unearthed in 1947, were discovered after property became a state park. Marshall Monument, overlooking this spot, was erected following movement inaugurated in 1886 by Native Sons of the Golden West. Coloma (El Dorado) LUMMIS HOME STATE HISTORICAL MONUMENT This building was constructed by Charles F. Lummis (1859531 1928), author, editor, poet, athlete, librarian, historian, archeologist, etc. He selected this site in 1895 chiefly because of the mammoth, ancient sycamore (El Alisal). It has since died and been replaced by four saplings. 200 East Avenue 43, Los Angeles (Los Angeles) CASA DE ORO STATE HISTORICAL MONUMENT In the 1850's this building was a general merchandise store Op532 erated by Joseph Boston & Co. In later years the building was called Casa de Oro because of the unverified story that it was.
