California Mining Journal, April, 1943 NINETEEN . [High-Grade Lead Property in Nevada County on Bear River ‘T appears to be a highly important \¢ new discovery of exceedingly high grade lead-silver ore has been found in Nevada County, near the Placer County line, by Thos. E. Farley of Hollywood and George H. Hook of Auburn. The ore is exceptionally rich, carrying high content in lead and silver, some gold, and appears to be a discovery {hat should be of the utmost importance to the district. Hook Explains Geology Hook, who spent several months examining the property, states that the deposits occur in a limestone area of Pensylvania and Mississippian ages, surrounded by basic intrusions, diabase, amphibolite and hornblende schists. The Calaveras or Robinson formations have been subject to dynamic fracturing and the limestone dip almost vertically, Along these fracture planes, the deep-seated mineral solutions have flowed through and along these limes, filling them with anglesite and cerrusite on the surface, but deeper in the section galena and argentite appear, There is a great similarity of the mineralization and geological conditions of the area to that of Leadville, Colorado, Hook states. Months of Investigation The property was discovered last November by Farley and Hook, and prospecting and geological work have been carried on Since then. Hook is making a complete geological survey of the property and will complete the work shortly. Specimens of the ore have been examined by local mining men who state that they have never before seen ore of this character in this district. The discovery if proven up will open up a new and highly important district to the already important Nevada and Placer County mines. The land, 720 acres, is owned by Luke Williams, Grass Valley, Cal. It was examined by Idaho Maryland geologists last summer, but according to Farley neither VISALIA MEN LOCATE 60% IRON DEPOSIT IN MONTANA My partners and I have located a huge iron deposit in Sweet Grass County, Mont.; a few miles from the Stillwater chrome deposits now being developed for a government plant. The U. S. Bureau of Mines engineer, from Helena, who examined the properiy last October, said it was in his estimation a very large deposit. We have 5 claims in the heart of it. Assays run from 45% to 75%; the regular run would be around 60% iron—H. B. CURTIS, 801 So. Conyer St., Visalia, Cal. DOLOMITE IN NEW DEMAND A survey of the high-grade dolomite deposits of the U. S. has been completed by the bureau of mines in response to an increasing demand for dolomite as a source of magnesium, the new light-weight metal used in airplanes, and for dolomite refractories in metallurgical furnaces. Formerly regarded as a variety of commonplace limestone found in nearly every State, dolomite recently has attained prominence due to its wartime uses. Metallurgical industries working at top speed to turn out alloys and other vital metals to the war program also are demanding more dolomite for use in furnace linings. SAN LUIS OBISPO. COUNTY E. D. Rodgers, Santa Cruz, has sold his quicksilver mine in San Luis Obispo County to the Idaho Quicksilver Mining Co. Rodgers
has been operating the property for seven years, and took out 65 flasks during the past eight months. Lawrence K. Regua, 536 East Valley Road, Santa Barbara, is general manager for Idaho Quicksilver. they nor Williams encountered the heavily mineralized area that has been brought to light by his and Hook’s explorations. PLACER COUNTY Harold R. Beresford was granted a hearing before the California Debris Commission in Sacramento March 25th, on his apPlicatiton to hydraulic the Adams Pit Mine near Forest Hill. Beresford proposes to store tailings in the North Fork Debris Control Dam on the North Fork American River. NEVADA COUNTY Dillon’s Mines, including Dillon-Treasure Box property at Washington, is continuing operations with four men employed. Frank Dillon, Washington, Cal., is president and superintendent. DOMINATION OF ENGLISH MONEY I like ‘the Journal especially for its department on amateur mineralogists and geOlogists, and secondly for the editorial policy on the “new deal” and the domination of English money over American mining enter_ prises, I am a disabled veteran of World War number 1, and a student of Waldemar Lindgren.
