California Mining Journal, April, 1943 TWENTY-ONE Wa the Grass Valley district has suffered a decided blow from the government’s gold mine closing order, now having only 540 miners at work, as compared »with approximately 2,600 in the boom days, some ray of hope for better days will be forthcoming when the announcement of a magnesium operation for the district is «made. Ft To Use Brandenburg Process About this, time last year California Mining Journal was, as some of our critics say, “ “going off the deep end” in the matter of doing a little boosting for the patented process of extracting magnesium metal from serpentine. Everyone knows how much eer“pentine there is in our mining areas—billions and billions of tons—and when H. R. ‘Brandenburg, then head chemist for the Cowell Lime & Cement Co., Concord, Cal., gave out the information that none of the serpentine of Northern California and Southern Oregon would run less than 300 *. pounds of: magnesium metal to’ the ton, and the light metal was selling for 27 cents per pound, we conceived a brand new industry for the* West. And the Journal then did “some work for Brandenburg and his process. “The upshoot of it was that “Brandy” was “ealled to Grass Valley for a number of con“ferences, the*result being that on Oct. 1st, 1942, ‘the resigned his position with the Cow‘ell company and went to Fresno, Cal., where he carried’ on; tests and operation plans desired by his backers. Completing his studies he moved to Grass Valley about March Ist. Who's’ Who in Manganese _, Brandenburg has refused to divulge the i identity of his financiers, but putting a ; number of facts together it begins to look ‘aS if the magnesium operators will be California’s leading gold operators, Idaho-Maryland Mines. One of the walls of the Idaho’s gold ledge is serpentine of a great width, the mining of which will belittle or no work : beyond the hoisting of the rock. _ Errol MacBoyle, executive vice-president and principal owner in the Idaho-Maryland, : is now in Washington, but nothing has been : given out by his company relative to the «-company’s entrance into the strategic opera. tion. ¢ Present Manufacturers {Magnesium is now being manufactured on ! the Texas coast from sea water by the Dow *: Chemical Co., at Las Vegas by Anaconda, and at Permanente, in Santa Clara County, Cal., by Henry Kaiser. Reports state that ’ Kaiser.is getting out 1,000,000 Ibs. per month, using dolomite from the hills of San Benito .County and salt water from Moss Landing, ‘ Monterey County. The Moss Landing plant _gets the raw material as far as the magne. sium chlorida state, while the plant at Permanente makes the finished product. It takes 67 tons of sea water to make the same amount of metal that comes from one ton of serpentine. Magnesium metal is much lighter than aluminum, one cubic foot of the former weighing 108 Ibs. as compared with 160 Ibs. for the latter. It is fast becoming the prin‘cipal metal used in airplanes. « For true, Accurate analyses of strategic ‘minerals, send Samples to Ragooland-Broy --Euboratories; 754° Natoma: St., S.
