California Mining Journal, April, 1943 TWENTY-THREE Stanislaus Line Gets Attention . Bauxite on Tuolumnethe Federal government now busy trying to find some bauxite nearer to the new aluminum plant at Riverbank, Stanislaus Co., Cal., than that in Arkansas or Dutch Guiana, South America, the following printed by the Sonora (Cal.) Banner is of interest and should be the cause of considerable prospecting in many areas: “Authorities in Washington are interested in making a survey of the Cooperstown clay deposit, just over the line in Stanislaus County, because of the bauxite which the deposit contains. The presence of bauxite has been known for some time to be in the clay on several ranches in the district. “Assays have proved the ore, used in making aluminum, to be of a low grade, and up to this time the opinion has been held that it could not compete with high-grade ores in other parts of the country. It is learned, however, that the new aluminum plant at Riverbank will be able to handle low-grade ores, and it is hoped it will accept the Cooperstown ore for manufacture because of its nearness to the plant.” Testing Ione Clay For several months past the U. S, Bureau of Mines had been testing several clay properties in the Ione, Amador County, district, the main one being that of Mark Bacon. Results of the tests have not been reported. The Wallen lands also are being tested. Bauxite in Yuba County At a recent meeting of Western Mining Council in Grants Pass, Ore., O. E. Conner, Box 371, Grants Pass, pulled out a government report which described a bauxite deposit of interest in Yuba County, Cal., two miles south of Smartville. As yet there has been no move to test the very extensive clay deposits of Lincoln, Placer County, for alunite. TUOLUMNE COUNTY Reporting to the Chamber of Commerce on mining activity in Tuolumne County, Hubert Nead, Sonora, predicted good production from the Oak Hill Copper mine near LaGrange, following preliminary development work now in progress. A mill will be constructed at the Marsh Flat Chrome mine in the near future. CALAVERAS COUNTY S. Menchini, superintendent of the Rough Diamond Crystal Mine at Chile Gulch, reports that a number of good crystals have been taken from the mine lately. So far operations have chiefly consisted of cleaning out, enlarging and retimbering the old ’ shaft. Six men are employed, working two shifts. FRESNO COUNTY Alexander Feuerstein, 3863 Kerckhoff St., Fresno, Cal, has completed installation of a crusher and mill at his tungsten property, located near the Indian settlement in Burroughs Valley, 6% mi. e. Tollhouse. Feuersten also holds a gold placer property on Dry Creek, near Friant. H. H, Chick and W. F. Bush, representatives of the service-sales division of a San Francisco roller bearing company, spent seveval days recently inspecting tungsten plants in the vicinity of Winnemucca, Nev. Denies Reported Purchase Of Utica Mine in Calaveras The Mar, 11th issue of the Calaveras Californian, published by Senator Jesse Mayo, printed the following: Reports that the Utica gold mines at Angels Camp has been purchased by the EmpireStar Mines, the Grass Valley subsidiary of the Newmont Mining Corp., a world-wide concern, were denied Thursday morning by Robert Searls of San Francisco, attorney for the Empire Star Mines. “The Empire-Star Mines have not purchased the mines in question or any gold mines at Angels Camp,” Searls stated, “and the company doesn’t own an inch of ground in Calaveras County. f “The company is at present not interested in acquiring any gold mines in view of the present attitude of the WPB regarding the
gold mining industry.” However, Searls statement concluded with the optimistic remark that “we can’t tell what the future will be, but hope there will be an opportunity in the future for the development of mines at Angels Camp and all along the Mother Lode.” ; Reports that the Newmont corporation had purchased the famous Utica holdings first appeared in the March issue of the ‘California Mining Journal under the heading “Newmont Reported as Buying Utica Mine in Calaveras.” ais (Editor’s note: California Mining Journal wrote Mr. Fred Nobs, general manager for Empire-Star at Grass Valley, and failed to receive either a denial or ‘confirmation’ of the reported sale.) oy (Saf upon as living necessities. q N LLL SS ALAS ALA ALASALAALAAAAAA AAAS AA AAA AA LAL ALAASASALAL ALS \ It shall be. Bureau of Mines is expediting exploration and research in a plan designed to yield sufficient domestic manganese for manufacturing 87,000,000 tons of steel annually, on the basis of 12 pounds of manganese to each ton of steel. Since 1939, Bureau exploration reached 13 states, including California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah and. Washington, and included 37 projects, 34 of which are completed. The complete Bureau program calls for establishment of four milling plants adjacent to the West Coast, located at Las Vegas, Nev., Delta, Utah, Parker Dam, Cal.-Ariz., and Artillery Peak, Ariz. Two plants for producing manganese by hydro-metallurgical methods will be located at Garfield, Utah, and Las Vegas, Nev. ; ARIZONA’S SILVER OUTPUT DOWN IN 1942 Production: of silver in Arizona was 7,050,015 fine oz. .of recoverable metal in 1942, a decrease of 448,245 fine oz, or 6%, from 1941, About 68% of output was recovered as a byproduct from copper ore mined at Bisbee, Ajo, Jerome and Superior. About 64% of the state output came from Copper Queen, United Verde, New Cornelia and Magma-mines. The decrease in 1942 production resulted chiefly from decline in production -from the Denn, Copper Queen, United Verde and Magma properties, all copper producers. _ fers SIAASAGALISASASISSSASSASAASSAISALSAS SALAS DSSS LL "sd CMJ GE 4-343 nf» ~.
