Altp CANADA TO MINE IRON IN MESABI RANGE EXTENSION After four years of preliminary survey, the Canadian and Ontario governments have started development at Steep Rock Lake, Port Arthur, Ont., on the 100 million ton deposit of rich iron ore, which is an extension of the fabulous Mesabi range in Minnesota. Twelve million dollars will be spent before the first ore goes to the blast furnaces, probably in 1944. Initial production of 1,000,000 tons a year is expected. But first the Seine river must be diverted, huge channels blasted and the lake pumped dry, BERRY CREEK QUICKSILVER GROUP GETS $15,000 LOAN The Berry Creek group of quicksilver properties in the Tuscarora, Nev., vicinity has received RFC approval on its application for a $15,000 development loan. J. W. Gainey, superintendent, and Walter B. Lenhart, consulting engineer, owners of the property, are cooperating with RFC’s resident engineer, Louis D. Gordon in planning development. The RFC loan went through in a matter of sixty-odd days, due to the high values in the property, the owners state. BUTTE COUNTY D. W. Leeke, engineer for the Metals Reserve Co., reports that considerable chrome ore has been received at the stockpile at Oroville since its establishment in December, and receipts are expected to increase when roads to some of the mines are cpened.
