NEW BUREAU OF MINES HEADS—Assistant Director and three new Regional Engineers appointed by
Secretary Ickes under the U. S. Bureau’s reorganization plan. Left to right: Stephen M. Shelton, Regional Engineer, Eastern Division, with headquarters at College Park, Maryland; Dr. R. S. Dean, former Chief Metallurgist at
Salt Lake, now Assistant Director, Washington, D. C.; Stuart R. Zimmerly, Regional Engineer, Western Region, with
headquarters at Salt Lake City, and Eugene D. Gardner, Regional Engineer, Central Region, with headquarters at
Rolla, Missouri. We see new life in the Bureau if Dr. Dean is allowed to use his knowledge that “The West Has
Every Strategic Mineral Necessary to Preserve Democracy.” In other words it is not necessary for us to maintain
payrolls in foreign countries to get these minerals.
