Lowe Yow CALI ROR N I ~A Sacramento had barely shorn its swaddling clothes ten years after California was admitted to the Union when the town was made the permanent home of the State Fair. Prior to that, major events were the establishment of Captain John A. Sutter’s settlement and James Marshall’s discovery of gold in Sutter’s mill race. Review of agricultural displays and livestock has been one of the historic annual events at the Fair. Present accommodations were not always on as large a scale. Interest has never lagged in grandstand events as is demonstrated by the corresponding illustration. Hub of California activity is at the State Fair every autumn. California was thrilled by a great display of agricultural wealth at Marysville in 1858 when a special building for the occasion was constructed. The first few State fairs were held in different localities each year.
