during this period averaged a minimum of 4,500. Thousands
of fishermen are also attracted by the many mountain lakes
and streams. In 1963 an estimated 193,000 angler days
were spent fishing in Nevada County waters. Of this total,
106,800 days were spent fishing for wild game fish.
Water related sports are also increasing in popularity.
Englebright Reservoir, a popular boating and water skiing
area, was constructed to control debris from past hydraulic
mining operations. This reservoir is only a few miles
west of the proposed project. Nevada County has an abundance of lakes and streams. There are 531 miles of cold
water streams and canals. There are 106 lakes and reservoirs totaling 9,580 acres of surface area.
There are many camping, hiking and picnicking facilities
scattered throughout this entire region. The increased
accessibility that would be provided by the improvement
of Route 20 would definitely make this area more attractive.
Do Resources
The proposed alignment does not pass through any commercial forest land; however, pine trees are growing on about
6 percent of the total right of way required.
The proposed realignment passes through an area of old
mining claims. Some of these claims are still held by
companies in hopes that the price of gold will become high
enough to warrant reopening the mines. These mines are
subterranean and will not be displaced by the project.
The primary impact on the agricultural industry of this
area is the removal of 232 acres of dry grazing land and
17 acres of irrigated pasture. Much of the land classified as "dry grazing land" has been purchased by land speculators and is no longer used for the primary purpose of
raising cattle.
In general the proposed project will have a negligible
impact upon the resources of this area. However, it will
provide a better means of transporting goods, especially
lumber products, to markets outside the county.
6. Industrial
The proposed project does not adversely affect any industrial operations of any kind. The increased accessibility
provided by this project may help to attract more industry
to the Grass Valley area.
