It is a somewhat different type “boom” than Grass Valley has experienced in the past. Its first was the Indian “boom”. Before the white man, the Indians came because here was a plentitude of fish, game, water, temperate climate, generous supply of native building materials such as timber, adobe mud and reeds, and natural fortresses to protect their homes from invaders. The second Grass Valley “boom” was the white settlers, some who came with the ill-fated Donner Party and those who followed soon thereafter. They made their homes in Grass Valley for the same reasons as did the Indians, plus the fact they had little heart to journey further. The third “boom” was heard round the world. In droves, the ‘49ers came. They came for gold. They left with it, and without it. Today, a fourth “boom” is pendMove on the average of once every six years. It seems people are not moving to something but away from something . . things like smog, pollution, pole gestion, high taxes, crime, crowde recreational facilities and oust areas of displeasure.
