This remarkable young lady will grow up to become
... one of the first women to receive a baccalaureate degree in civil engineering
from the University of California, Berkeley (1894)
... the first woman certificated in architecture by the famed
Ecole des Beaux Arts, Paris (1902)
... the first woman certificated in architecture by the
State of California (1904)
... the designer of William Randolph Hearst's fabled mountaintop aerie San Simeon
... the creator of more than 700 light-filled cottages, stately homes
and eclectic buildings throughout California and the West.
And yet, at the end of her career, she will destroy
her archives of plans
and drawings and die
with the legacy of her
accomplishments
and architectural
treasures ignored
by history.
