FOREWORD Questions pertaining to the initiation and maintenance of rights in mining claims, and to various rules and regulations governing prospecting and mining operations are constantly directed to the Division of Mines. Manner of locating and holding mineral claims in California, revised and reprinted nine times since its initial publication in 1931, has proved helpful in answering many, but not all of these questions. To partially meet the deficiency, this report has been assembled to include in addition to a revised edition of the forementioned publication, sections that discuss other regulations affecting mining, and which experience has shown are most frequently dealt with by the Information Section of the Division. The general information presented is intended only as a guide. A comprehensive summary of mining statutes and related court decisions will be found in Division of Mines Bulletin 123, American Mining Law, by A. H. Ricketts. Application of the general information herein to specific legal problems should be referred to an attorney, since the Division of Mines does not maintain a legal counsellor on its staff. L. A. NorMAN, JR. Supervising Mining Geologist Division of Mines June 5, 1952 (3)
