SANTA ROSA, SONOMA CO., CAL.
ITS COMMERCIAL INDUSTRIES.—ITS PRODUCTIVE SURROUNDINGS.—THE CITY OF
ROSES.—THE CROWN OF SONOMA’S BRAUTY.
The manufactures of Santa Rosa are varied and quite numerous. The following may
be named: Santa Rosa Planing Mill, Foundry and Machine Shops, Santa Rosa_ Roller
Flouring Mills, Santa Rosa Wine Cellar, Santa Rosa Tannery, Santa Rosa Soap Works,
nearly a dozen blacksmith and wagon shops, a foundry, Santa Rosa Marble an Granite
Works, Santa Rosa Brewery, the largest fruit cannery on the Pacific Coast, with a score
or more of miscellaneous manufacturing houses, turing out the usual variety of goods
and products in acityof itssize. The wine intcrests are very extensive, being second
to the largestin the State. Myr. I. de Turk’s winery and cellars alone having a capacity
of one million gallons. The papers of Santa Rosa are the daily and weekly Sonoma
Democrat, founded in 1857, the oldest newspaper in the county; the daily and weekl
Republican, established in 1875; they are both liberally supported and ably conducted.
The celebrated Mark West Springs are onlynine miles from Santa Rosa, over a good
road, and is a charmiug spot in the mountains, with warm and cold spnogs. Clear,
sparkling trout streams, shady walks, commodious grounds, well-arranged bath-houses,
and withal a well-conducted hotel.
Santa Rosans are proud of their abundant sepply of good, pure, limpid, mountain
spring water. It comes from the foothill mountain streams east of the city, and is carried into a reservoir covering five acres, about three miles from Santa Rosa, thence to
Lake Ralphine, a beautiful artificial lake of twenty-six acres, with a depth of twentyfive and a half feet. The company has twenty miles of pipe in the city, conveying the
water wherever needed.
Within the last two years the Santa Rosa & Carquinez Railroad,a branch of the
Southern Pacific Company’s system, has been completed, opening a market for the products of the Santa Rosa valley in the Eastern States. This line, together with the San
Francisco & North Pacific Railroad, known as the ‘* Donahue route,’’ makes transportation light, easy and rapid to San Francisco and the East. Among the industries we
may mention the Santa Rosa Planing Mills, owned and conducted by that sterling
citizen, Mr. P. H.Kroncke. He makes wine tanks and fruit boxes a specialty.
The popular townsman, Geo. A. Tupper, Esq., whose friends are legion, still keeps
the Tupper House. Solid comfort there and reasonable rates.
The Santa Rosa Brewery, for years of popular standing, still retains its prestige of
making and selling the dest beer in the county. Mr. J. Haltinner is proprictor.
The Occidental Hotel, which has been advertised in this Cazel/eer for many years,
is well kept by Messrs. Riddle Bros. Itis the largest and finest north of San Francisco
and hasa large patronage.
A large industry is that of the Santa Rosa Pioneer Steam Laundry, established in
1835. They employ no Chinese help, and do a very extensive business. Messrs. Ahlf &
Co. are proprietors.
Mr. F. Berka, a prominent citizen of Santa Rosa, carries on a large trade in all
kinds of lumber, doors, windows, blinds, posts, pickets, also deals in lime, cement, etc.
Office and yard comer of Eighth and Wilson streets.
The most extensive stables are the Santa Rosa and Fashion Stables, run by Messrs.
McGregor & Hockin. Commercial and tourist’s teams, excursion and picnic wagons,
etc., are a specialty at reasonable rates. Givethem acall.
The Grand Hotel is onc of the best-conducted houses in the State. In saying this, it
does not fully convey the meaning. Mr. Borris Zoberbier, the proprietor, being a
number of years on the road, knows fullywhat the commercial man, the tourist, the
theatrical manager and troupe desires. A good room, good bed, and a good home-cooked
meal: This is what one gets at the Grand, with the best attention from the landlord and his polite assistants.
On the opposite page isa cut of the ‘'F. M.”" and “O. K.”’ cigars:manufactured in
Santa Rosa by Mr. Frank Muther, who has been over thirty years in the trade. His
impor iions of fine tobaccos, cigars and smokers’ articles areallfirst class. His factory
and sic e is located at 535 Fourth street.
“M J. F. Smith still keeps the coziest little hotel in Sonoma county—the Magnolia.
His cates are only one dollar perday. Good rooms and most excellent table. The streetcars pass the door from every train.
