The papers of Santa Rosa are the daily and weekly Sonoma Democrat, founded in 1857, the oldest newspaper in the county; the daily and weekl Republican, established in 1875; they are both liberally supported and ably conducted. The celebrated Mark West Springs are onlynine miles from Santa Rosa, over a good road, and is a charmiug spot in the mountains, with warm and cold spnogs. Clear, sparkling trout streams, shady walks, commodious grounds, well-arranged bath-houses, and withal a well-conducted hotel. Santa Rosans are proud of their abundant sepply of good, pure, limpid, mountain spring water. It comes from the foothill mountain streams east of the city, and is carried into a reservoir covering five acres, about three miles from Santa Rosa, thence to Lake Ralphine, a beautiful artificial lake of twenty-six acres, with a depth of twentyfive and a half feet. The company has twenty miles of pipe in the city, conveying the water wherever needed. Within the last two years the Santa Rosa & Carquinez Railroad,a branch of the Southern Pacific Company’s system, has been completed, opening a market for the products of the Santa Rosa valley in the Eastern States. This line, together with the San Francisco & North Pacific Railroad, known as the ‘* Donahue route,’’ makes transportation light, easy and rapid to San Francisco and the East. Among the industries we may mention the Santa Rosa Planing Mills, owned and conducted by that sterling citizen, Mr. P. H.Kroncke. He makes wine tanks and fruit boxes a specialty. The popular townsman, Geo. A. Tupper, Esq., whose friends are legion, still keeps the Tupper House. Solid comfort there and reasonable rates. The Santa Rosa Brewery, for years of popular standing, still retains its prestige of making and selling the dest beer in the county. Mr. J. Haltinner is proprictor. In saying this, it does not fully convey the meaning. Mr. Borris Zoberbier, the proprietor, being a number of years on the road, knows fullywhat the commercial man, the tourist, the theatrical manager and troupe desires. A good room, good bed, and a good home-cooked meal: This is what one gets at the Grand, with the best attention from the landlord and his polite assistants. On the opposite page isa cut of the ‘'F.
