THE RESTORATION AND PRESERVATION of an historic building is an important and valuable activity; and when this building can serve as a community center, convention facility, auditorium, and theater — bringing thousands of visitors to the community — its restoration is an economic and social necessity. Nevada City, California, is one of the loveliest of all the Gold Rush towns; its citizens can now purchase and restore — for minimal cost — the magnificent old Nevada Theater, closed since 1958. Nevada City was, during the 1850’s and 60’s, the entertainment center of the Sierra. It can become so once again, when the Nevada Theater — where Mark Twain, Lotta Crabtree, Jack London and Emma Nevada performed — is purchased and restored. The Nevada County Liberal Arts Commission has been raising money for this project for the past two years. Widespread and generous support has been received—but more is needed.
