AN ATTRACTIVE OPERATING THEATER is a great asset to any community, and the restored Nevada Theater would accommodate a wide range of theatrical and musical performances. Each year, a number of university and community repertory groups ask to stage productions in Nevada City and, at present, they cannot be accommodated. The Drama Departments of the University of California at Davis, the University of the Pacific, and San Jose State College have requested the use of a theater in Nevada City, as have repertory groups from Chico, Auburn, Folsom, and Georgetown. The University of Santa Clara is interested in presenting a program of summer theater and music in Nevada City if facilities were available. A similar project sponsored by the University of the Pacific in Columbia, California, has greatly benefitted that community — box office receipts for the six weeks’ season there are estimated at $17,000.
