2. “The Younger” Rector Brothers
Gilbert James and Edwin Meritt Rector grew up together in the National Hotel, Nevada City and throughout
their later childhood, they took an active part in the
operation of the hotel, especially the dining room. Their
father rotated them throughout other departments of
the hotel and by the time they reached college age, both
were well groomed in the various facets of hotel management.
During their youth, they were both most proficient
in gymnastics and on several occasions appeared in gymnastic acts at the old Nevada Theatre on Broad Street.
They were equally talented in musical endeavors — “‘Bert”’
playing the clarinet and Meritt the violin. They were in
constant demand for orchestral and theatrical productions in the county, and G. J. played first clarinet in the
Nevada City band that won second prize at the State
Fair in Sacramento. As with the elder Rector brothers
and their ancestors, the younger Rector brothers always
dressed with impeccable taste.
There was an age differential of several years between the “younger” Rector brothers as with the ‘“‘elder”
Rector brothers, yet this played no role in the great
compatibility and devotion between them that was legend
in Nevada County. Although they saw each other constantly. they always “shook hands” before departing
for their respective homes at days’ end. Each had the
mutual respect and admiration of the other, and no
major business or financial decisions were made unless
they were bilateral. Further, their character and sterling
traits were amazingly similar, i.e. a great sense of family
loyalty. a brilliant mind with excellent business acumen,
an insatiable desire for information obtained through
constant study, a piquant and subtle sense of humor, a.
