A. Gilbert James Rector. “Bert”? or G. J. was born in Hollister, California on September 16, 1875 and came to Nevada City with his parents in 1882. He died in San Francisco while visiting his son on September 1, 1938 just two weeks prior to his sixty-second birthday. After attending public schools in Nevada City, he matriculated at the University of California in Berkeley and was graduated cum laude in 1898. He was a charter member of Delta Tau Delta and Editor-in-Chief of the 1898 edition of the college yearbook, the “Blue and Gold’. After graduation, Bert traveled for six months, visiting relatives in Missouri and a number of our larger cities in the eastern United States. After returning to Nevada City, he assisted his father and uncle in the management of the National Hotel and Annex. He then spent several months in San Francisco in the employ of the various banking houses to learn the rudiments of banking. He returned to Nevada City and entered the new Nevada County Bank as assistant cashier in charge of the Nevada City branch. In 1906 Gilbert James Rector was made secretary and general manager of the bank, and in 1915, upon the death of Bayliss S. Rector, succeeded to the presidency holding this position until the sale of the bank. (See article on the Nevada County Bank). He married on January 7, 1902, Jessica Stewart Mott, a native of Sacramento and the daughter of George Morgan Mott, general manager for H. S. Crocker Company of San Francisco. Mr. Mott traced his ancestry in this country to 1635. From this marriage, one son, John Mott Rector, was born in Nevada City on June 6, 1904. Jessica Mott Rector died in Nevada City on January 7, 1957. Bert, like the rest of the family, took an active.
