City March 10, 1955 at the age of seventy-three. As an infant of six months, he came to Nevada City with his parents and spent his entire life in that community. Meritt attended the local public schools and was graduated in 1902 from the University of California. As with his brother, he served enough time in the hotel management field to master many of the problems encountered there. In 1902 he entered the Nevada County Bank and in accordance with Rector family policy, he graduated through various positions to the office of secretary-treasurer which he occupied until the bank was sold in 1923. (See article on Nevada County Bank). On April 19, 1911 Edwin Meritt married Ruth Richards of Nevada City and they had three children: E. William born October 15, 1912. Mary Margaret, born November 8, 1914. Ruth Griffith, born June 19, 1916. Ruth Richards Rector died in Nevada City, September 30, 1967. “E. M.” belonged to the Elks, the Odd Fellows and the Native sons of the Golden West. He was at one time a member of the Nevada County Democratic Central Committee. He also served for several years in a most efficient manner as a member and later as president of the Nevada City Board of Education. It .was during his tenure as president that a badly needed new grammar school in Nevada City was constructed, largely due to his efforts. Meritt always maintained a deep interest in and devotion to Nevada County — to quote from the History of Placer and Nevada County: Edwin Meritt Rector, a native son, proud of his association with the Great Golden State is a well known business man who has helped to stabilize both commerce and industry in.
