plans to return to Nevada City and once again occupy
the old home, a victorian landmark of Nevada County.
5. Mary Margaret Rector, daughter of Edwin Meritt
Rector and Ruth Richards Rector and a lifetime resident
of Nevada City was born there November 8, 1914. After
attending local schools Margaret was graduated from the
University of California at Berkeley with an AB degree
in the class of 1936. She then continued her studies in
the post graduate school of Columbia University, New
York City where she obtained a masters degree in history
in 1937. After completing her studies, she returned to
Nevada City and taught at the high school level until
her marriage.
Mary Margaret Rector married John Lloyd Larue in
Nevada City on August 3, 1940. John, a promising young
attorney, was the son of pioneer parents, and his father,
who was deceased, had been one of Nevada County’s
most prominent barristers. From this union, there were
two children, John Rector Larue, born in Nevada City,
October 10, 1941 and Marianne Larue, born also in
Nevada City on the 27th of June, 1946.
With the advent of World War II, John enlisted in
the Army of the United States in the Provost Marshall’s
Department and spent the war years on active duty in
Washington, D.C. where he was joined by Margaret and
their infant son, John.
After the war, the Larues returned to Nevada City,
John returning to his general law practice and Margaret
later to resume teaching in the local high school. After a
most gratifying career of fifteen years as a dedicated
teacher of English, History and French, she retired in
1969 and is presently enjoying a well-earned life of
leisure. John’s practice continued to thrive and, as his
father before him, he has long been one of thie leading
and most highly regarded attorneys in the county.
