TUESDAY, SEPT. 8, 1885. In examing candidates who apply for positions on the training ships, naval surgeons have discovered that heart disease, caused by cigarette smoking is alarmingly In ninety-nine cases out of one hundred the boy is rejected because of this defect. Commenting on the fact, the Scientific American says: ‘‘It shoulé be a warning to parents that the deadly cigarette is sure-to— bring about incalculable injury to the young.” Soit will, no doubt, if parents are aware of their children’s practices; but many boys who smoke cigarettes do it secretly. If parents who suspect—or, indeed, if they do not suspect— that this habit has been formed, would take the trouble and impress the youngsters of the danger they are incurring, by some such illustration as that offered by the naval s, the habit. would be quickly checked. Few boys ‘are go addicted to this vice that they will commit suicide for it. Hon. C. W. WINCHESTER, & Methodist cle an of Buffalo, New York, declares that Jonab was not swallowed by 4 whale, but by a shark, the whale being incapable of swallowing @ man whole. As to the prophets living in the shark’s belly three days and three nights, Brother Winchester says: ‘“‘It is not more wonderful that Jonah should have been so marveously preserved than that some souls should have been saved by the mercy of God from the gutters and brothels of modern times, of which cases can be quoted.” A Barn on the Palo Alto Farm containing straw was totally destroyed by fire Monday night. The damage will amount to $4,000. oR TS EES Advertised Letters. The following is a list of letters remaining in the Postoffice at Neyada City, California, for the week ending Sept. 5. One of the all absorbing and important question that are continually arising to the consumer, is the question, Are the results of New All Roller Milling ; in the manufacture of flour a success? And what is there about it that we have been taxed such enormous prices as we have paid in the last year for our flour? Or is it the ‘‘system” we have paid for? Is the bread we now use on our tables better bread than we used to have? And ifso, in what ?. Every house keeper and bread maker will sum the whole question up in one word by saying, itis whiter: But-atthesame time they all complain and say they know, but don’t see the reason why, their bread dries out so much quicker than it use to. That it seems to them they never -have any fresh bread any more to use ontheir tables. And that cake made of the new flour is almost too dry to eat after it is one day old. These are very grave and serious considerations and affect tired, sick. and disgusted with dry bread, or being put to the trouble of baking once or twice a day, in order.tokeep our table supplied with bread that is at all palatable.
