Mw . bays. Th ; this as a suggestion, only The Day rat. PUBLISHED AT Nevada City, Nevada County, ME WR oes odo sco Bees 15 cTs. ‘WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 8, 1836. —— EEE Re-survey ef the BayThe appropriation made by the last Congress to tlie coast. survey, for the re-survey of San Francisco bay has last been rendered available, and the Engineers on the ‘survey will commence operations “mext week. The beginning will be made on San Pablo and Suisun are three reasons why these were first selected. In the first place they are more important than thesouthern part of San Francisco bay; second, in view. of the importance of the hydraulic mining industry, it was to ascertain if there has been any local filling since the last survey in 1873. It has been said that this work soon to-begin will settle once for all the slickens ‘question. Although there was a great deal . of hydraulicking before 1873, yet there ‘was no material difference in the survey of that year and 1854. The advocates of the mining industry are confident that this survey will show a similar state of things in this part of the bay. There is still another thing to be considered in rendering a decision on the question, The river water sweeps along the eastern side of the bay with such velocity that ‘the sediment in suspension cannot settle. It is carried to the south, and in some places there has been local filling of at least six feet, according tothe statements of scow captains. A complete survey of afl parts of the bay and its entrances is necessary before the mining discussion can be definitely settled. 6 In a Devil of a°Fix. The Call and Bulletin o¢cupy an unenviable position in relation to the Republican and Democratic nominees for Governor, and just how they will flop no “feller” can tell. Both papers urged, the Republican convention to nominate Swift fur Governor. They were enthusiastic in his behalf. Switt was nominated and they were delighted. They then, urged the Democrats to nominate Bartlett. He was nominated ‘and they were delighted again. Now. the quey comes ‘‘which one will they support 7’? We don’t exactly see how they are going to get out of the dilemma in which they are placed. If Swift had been defeated they would have had a tiptop excuse for going for the Democratic nominee, and if Bartlett had been defeated they would have as ae ly good excuse for going for th Republican nominee ; but as it now stands it seems as though they were compelled in order to be consistent, to go for both Swift and Bartlett. Probably the best way for the Call-Bulletin to do is to boom Swift one day and Bartlett the next and so continue until the -close of the campaign.
