  • LoT 5, BLOCK 32 NEVADA CITY THE PRESENT DAY NEVADA CITY WINERY BUILDING HOUSING RETAIL SPACE AND BARREL STORAGE SITS ON THE SITE OF A RESIDENCE, ITS STONE FOUNDATION PICTURED HERE. ALL THE STONE USED ON THE EXTERIOR OF THE WINERY BUILDING CAME FROM THE FORMER RESIDENCE FOUNDATION. THE ORIGINAL WINERY OCCUPIED THE OLD FOUNDRY GARAGE, USED TODAY FOR PRODUCTION, OFFICES AND WAREHOUSE. THE OFFICIAL BRADLEY MAP OF 1869 SHOWS A NARROW PLOT RUNNING FROM SPRING STREET TO DEER CREEK MARKED “DUCA”. THE 1867 BEAN’S DIRECTORY LISTS A PHILIP DUCA AS BEING A 34 YEAR OLD BARBER AND A NATURALIZED CITIZEN. HIS BUSINESS WAS LOCATED AT 64 BROAD STREET AND HIS RESIDENCE ON SPRING STREET, PRESUMABLY THE SITE OF THE STONE FOUNDATION. BY 1871 THE NEVADA COUNTY DIRECTORY LISTS HIS RESIDENCE AS BEING ON COYOTE STREET. THE SANBORN FIRE INSURANCE MAP OF 1891 NOTES A DWELLING ON THE PROPERTY. A VEGETABLE GARDEN EXTENDED DOWN TO THE CREEK. BY THE 1912 EDITION OF THE FIRE MAP, THE MINER’S FOUNDRY GARAGE IS SHOWN. THE GARAGE BECAME THE SITE OF THE NEVADA CITY WINERY IN 1982. IT APPEARS THAT THE STONE FOUNDATION IS FROM A RESIDENCE BUILT IN THE LATE 1860'S, PROBABLY THAT OF PHILIP DUCA, AND USED AS A PRIVATE RESIDENCE UNTIL THE 1920'S. THE WINERY EXPANSION TOOK PLACE IN 1999-2000.
