NEVADA CITY IN 1853
Settled in 1849 and first known as ‘‘Deer Creek Dry~.
-Diggings’’ and /or as ‘‘Caldwells Upper Store’’, this _
~“town was christened ‘‘Nevada’’ in 1850.
Incorporated as ‘‘The City of Nevada’’ in 1853,. its
charter was twice revoked, but in 1856 the Legislature
pranted Nevada City the charter under which it yet
unctions as a corporate political body.
That part of the town shown in the foreground had
been destroyed by fire in September, 1852 but had been
rebuilt when this sketch was made. The Congregational
church, shown in the middle background was built in
the fall of 1851, replacing a little shake church, the.
first house of worship in this town.
