ROSH HASHANAH.
Commencement of the © Jewish
New Year—The Great Festival.
The Jewish New Year, 5,646, begins at sunset this evening. All
business places in this city under
the management of our citizens of
Hebrew origin will be closed from
6 o’clock torfight until the sume
hour Friday night.
One prominent feature of the
New Year’s services is the blow‘. ing of the Shofar, the ram’s horn,
-. probably intended to arouse in
“. every Jewish heart a deeper love
for their ancient creed by stirring
up historical reminiscences.
Quentin. }.
Rosh hashanah is the Hebrew
eqalvalent of New Year’s -day.
A brief consideration of this great
Hebraic festival cannot but be of
general interest. It is based upon
the Mosaic law, and is called, the
Day of Remembrance. The Bible
does not-mention the first day of
the seventh “month “asa New
Year’s day, and, in fact, it is
known that the Israelites’ cele-brated their New. Year in spring
time, and it was probably not until the arrival of Alexander the
Great in Palestine that a change
took place from the spring’ to the
autumn season. Since that time,
however, the celebration has been
held in the autumn. Whether or,
not the Jews in Palestine celebrated a civil or national New Year’s
day about April, and a canonical
New Year’sday in the month of
September, is a matter that has
not yet been decided to the satisfaction of the clergy: of the Jewish
church. From the New Testament and Josephus we know that
the New Year in Autumn time
was then already in vogue .and
solemnly celebrated. The Jewish
doctors of the Talmudical period
try to give in their writings great
importance to the celebration of
-this august day, and since the
second exile of the Israelites and
the loss of their national independence, they naturally cling
with fervor and devotion to a day
which brings. them together with
their coreligionists to review the
events of the past year. They exchange either--with mirth or-sorrow reflections and congratulations of their past experiences.
The first day of “Tishri” is ushered in with prayer and thanksgiving to God, with pious and fervent
prayer for the country in which
the Jew finds himself and with
joyful congratulations exchanged
among relatives and friends.
Desperate Opium Fiends.
The opium fiends; lovers and
the like who congregated here last
week from the surrounding coun;
try made things lively in Chinatown. Tbe keepers of the opium
dens did not want them around
for fear the police would make
trouble about it, but the visitors
were bound to have their appetites
satisfied. at all hazards. They
forced. their way into .several of
the ‘dens by breaking through
doors and windows, and Saturday
night made two attempts to burn
the settlement by starting fires
with kindling ‘saturated with kerosene. Both fires were fortunately discovered almost as soon as
they were lighted. ‘‘Pale Faced
Harry” and Bill Watters were
among the visitors there that
night, and after having a smoke
they departed carrying with them
an opium pipe that Ah Sing had
and by which .he-set great store.
Ah Sing has sworn out a warrant
for the arrest of the two, who hail:
from the vicinity of Dutch Flat
but are now supposed to be at. the
State Fair.

FIRE ON GOLD FLAT.
Dwelling House Burned Yesterday Moruing—The' Insurance.
At about ten o’clock yesterday
morning the dwelling house of
Francis May situated on Gold
Fiat just below the Pittsburg mine
was totally consumed by fire.
Although the neighbors came to
the rescue promptly, only a small
portion of the furniture was saved.
[t is not positively known how the
fire originated, but a faulty flue
probably caused it.
The house, which was a story
and a half in hight and well constructed, was insured together
with the furniture, bedding, etc.,
in the Phoenix Fire Insurance
Company for $775. The loss approximates $1,200.
Mr. May a few months ago
bought the property from John
Robbins for $1,300.

His Loss Was Her Gain;
“Well madam,” said a fashionable physician to a wealthy lady
patient, ‘‘if you don’t like my perscriptions perhaps you had better
try Parker’s Tonic, or some other
quack stuff.” ‘‘You don’t mean
it Doctor,’’ she answered, ‘‘but
your advice may be good for all
Sometimes what you call
scientific mMedivine, after all.’
She got a bottle of Parker’s Tonic
and it cured her of neuralgia
arising from a disordered stomach
and nerves. She told her friends,
and now they all keep a doctor at
home in the-form of Parker’s
Tonic. 1m

Stranded Roughs.
A few of the roughs attracted
here from abroad by the Fair are
still hanging around, being dead
broke. and unable to get out of
town unless they walk, which they
are too lazy to do. ‘The most of
them will bear close watching.
They are the kindof fellows who
will commit most any kind of
lawlessness that does not require
too much nerve, if they can see a
few dollars in it. ates

The California quartz mine, in

some time past. Now comes the
intelligence that an entirely new

that the returns will be better than
ever. This property was bonded
to San Francisco parties and the

Post Mortem Examination.
The Tidings of Mgnday says:
This morning Doctors Webster,
Wagenor, Jones and Jamison, of
Grass Valley, and Dr. Valantine,
of Nevada City;held a post mortem
examination of the body of Mrs.
Rider. The lady had keen ill a
long tin.e and her case attracted
much attention in this county,
and because of assertions made in
San Francisco of faith cure, the
case wassomewhat noted throughout the State. The examination
showed a multilocular fibrous tumor of about six years growth,
weighing a little over six pounds,
in the abnomical-—cavity;—the
heart had been diseased about
ten years and the mitral valve was
ossified and the heart was largely dilated; the right lung was
atrophied. :
