Cost of an Orchard. Land in Nevada eounty along the THURSDAY & SATURDAY EVE'GS line of the railway, and within three or four miles of railway shipping stations, can still be purchased at from . The Entire Track and Grand Stand $5 to $15 per acre. A portion of this land has timber enough on it to pay . for clearing. Other tracts wil cost . Running, Trotting and Pacing Races. . °°. : The best horsés entered in the regular Fair feitable. races-will contest, ; : from $8 to $20 per acre to clear it, while there are numerous ‘“‘ranches” which can be purchased at from $20 to $30 per acre, which have from 20 to 80 acres each of clear fruit !and already for the plow. After the land is cleared of brush it should be. plowed, cross‘plowed and thoroughly harrowed before planting 1.1e young trees. After the land is ready it will cost, on the} average, $1 each to purchase and plant WM.-8 uigwante PROPRIETOR the trees. When thisis done,-the approximate cost of\a 10-acye“tract will be $100 per year for thé tillage, pruning and necessary. dare of the trees. This will include the cost of plowing and harrowing the tract once a month for fiye’or six months each year.An orehard thus cared for will, except in v7” Tare instances, need no irrigation, and the growth of the trees will be*vigorous and censtant. The average growth of the branches of young trees on such Jands’as those of Mr. Bogue and Mr. Rodda, is from~18. to 30 inches. In the orchard of the lastinamed individual some of the trees have sent out branches five feet.in length during the present season. Where water is used, the price for irrigation will necessarily be added to the foregoing estimates, but it is claimed by many that the trees thrive better without irrigation, if thoroughly cultivated, than when irrigated, for the reasons that the roots penetrate deeper into the soil, extend over a greater space and are more fibrous than when irrigation is substituted for tillage. ; The foregoing estimate of expenses was furnished by a practical orchardist, from the result of his own experience in clearing a rocky, brush covered hillside and planting it in one of the finest and most profitable orchards within the Bartlett pear belt. . The expense of preparing the land will nec-: essarily vary with the locality, but these estimates are sufficiently definite to give a general idea of the required outlay for an orchard. ee ARKIVALS AT THE NATIONAL HOTEL. —— RECTOR BHOS....Proprietors .
