to 1880, gives a yield of $159,800,000. Of this $54,800,000 was from the
quartz mines, and $105,000,000 from the gravel or placer mines. The
average yield of the county during the last fifteen years has been between
three and four millions per year, and this would place the aggregate output of the county up to the present time at $210,000,000, which is a fair
estimate, without exaggeration. Of late years the quartz mines have
surpassed the gravel mines in the amount of their product, owing to the
