PROMINENT GRASS VALLEY BUSINESS MEN
One of the oldest established and best known
WM. CAMPBELL grocery and provision stores in Nevada County is
that of Win. Campbell, at Boston Ravine or South
Grass Valley. This store enjoys a large patronage and its goods are
always standard. It was started in 1856 by Campbell & Ashby as a
grocery, provision and general merchandise store, with bakery attached,
and continued by them until 1860, when Mr. Ashby disposed of his
interest to Alexander Stoddard. Messrs. Campbell and Stoddard conducted the business until 1877, when Mr. Stoddard retired. Since that
date Mr. Campbell has successfully conducted the business, being ably
assisted by hisson. Mr. Campbell is a native of Scotland, and was born
in 1528. He came to California in 1851, and after spending about a year
in Placer County, came to Grass Valley in April, 1852. He has been a
resident of this city since, and excepting a few trips to his birth place
and the Eastern States, has lived in Grass Valley. Mr. Campbell is
energetic in mining enterprises, being interested in a number of mines.

Much of the success of a mercantile house depends
upon its management, and this fact cannot be
more fully illustrated than in the success of Clinch
& Company, the grocers of this city. The management of the immense
business of this firm has been entrusted to Charles E. Clinch, a native
son of the golden West, who first saw the light of day in El Dorado
County, in 1858. He came to Grass Valley in 1866, and attended the
public schools. Mr. Clinch entered the employ of A. J. Foster as
clerk and salesman, and remained in this position for ten years, or until
the formation of the firm of Clinch & Co. He has since successfully
managed this firm and the house of Clinch & Co. is known all over
the State. Mr. Clinch was elected public administrator some years
ago, holding the office one term. He is popular socially and takes an
active part in every enterprise for the benefit of Grass Valley or Nevada
County. Mr. Clinch has a neat and comfortable home at the corner of
School and Neal St:eets.

The apothecary shop, as it was

that of W. Loutzenheiser & Son
can be found on the Pacific Coast.
This well-known and popular
establishment enjoys a reputation second to no store in California, and physicians or patients
having their medicines compounded at this store, can rely
upon their accuracy and genuineness. Their stock iscomplete
in every detail and nothing but
the very best is kept. Prescriptions are prepared by careful

store is deservedly popular. This
