For a smallish town, Nevada City abounds in charming places to stay
and fine eating houses. There are adequate and modern hotels, auto courts,
dining room's and restaurants, a variety large enough to accommodate almost

The-National Hotel and Coffee.Shop is one of the: older. and, more
historic hostelries, retaining many of its earlier characteristics, such “as-decorativé iron railings, old shutters, antique lounge and the 1869 register on

The Deer Creek Inn is another delightful spot. Known originally as
the New. York Hotel, built in 1880, it has recently been remodeled, with
charm and good taste. Thete is a unique parlor, and in the lounge may be
seen a beautiful and very old“rosewood grand piano built by Hale. In ex
cellent condition, this instrument; (which-probably-arrived via “the Horn)
has the true clear almost'tinkling tones of a spinet. as
The famous and aged Union Hotel, was once three.stories high and
terribly chic. The original buildingwas erected on its present/site in 1850
by Madame! Penn, and was~a well>known boarding house. Destroyed in
1851 by one/of'the four great jfires that seared the city, it was rebuilt and
