The news of the attempted)
holdup was immediately telegraphed to Marysville, and within
hours posses were under way to
hunt down the Tom Bell gang,}:
even if the hunt should take them
to the borders of Mexico.
On the outskirts of Marysville,
4 brass band and a parade of
Dobson admirers met the stage
and escorted it and its bullion
treasure to town. 1
Bell Curses Gang .
When Tom Bell finally rounded. :
up his men a couple of miles}:
north of the hold-up scene, he}:
ranted against them, and swore
that if they did not show more
grit and initiative on the next
job, he would shoot every one of
them.
Expecting to be hunted by sheriffs’ posses, he ordered the men
fo splil up and, by devious
routes, try to make it to the
Folsom hide-out. He would join
them there after the excitement
had died down.
Before he rode away, he directed Willy Farnsworth to head
for Nevada City to find Jim Webster and tell him what had happened at Dry Creek. Farnsworth
was to backtrack to Bullard’s
Bar and take the road from:
there over the divide to North:
San Juan. From that camp, he!
. should take the trail over Monte-'
zuma Hill, ford the South Yuba
at Black’s Crossing and continue =
wagonroad to Nevada City. _
