The Cover Design Drawn by Harriet Lobecker, ’27 The romantic sailing vessel, which brought Argonauts through the Golden Gate; a hardy gold seeker and his courageous wife, who in 49 panned gold from the mountain streams of the Sierras; a Spanish settler, lazily strumming his guitar; all these we have included in the cover design of this book as emblematic of Grass Valley’s early history and of gold mining, our chief industry today. The pine trees, which grew here long before the adventurer or pioneer had dreamed of California, are symbolic of a virgin land. From the sturdy logs of the pines the pioneer builded his cabin, and we, the descendants of these same pioneers, use logs to build the letters in the name of our book.
