10 THE QVILL much, but it’s not far from Reno, so he gets along pretty weli. The first.person I met wher we got off the cars in Nevada City was Will Thomas. “Bill” is running a hotel where Sugar Loat used to be, and seems to be very successful. On the way to the hotel. Bill showed me many signs of the Nevada I used to know, but the old town is rapidly being replaced by the new. On one of the streets, which I was told was called 254th street, I recognized Hazel MePherson. She is now conducting a young ladies’ seminary in Nevada. I was too tired to take in the town that night, but the next morning I went down and spent the day looking up od friends. On one of the main streets, called South Broad street, I saw a marriagebureau sign. Upon inquiry I learned that Lillian Pinch conducted it and was becoming rich fast. Just across the street from the marriage “joint’’ I saw a new building going up, and learned that it was Tom Richards’ pharmacy. which was being rebuilt, having recently burned down. Tom fills prescriptions for Doctor Vinton Muller, one of the most successful physicians in the city. Three blocks up the street is the New Nevada Theater, and upon passing this building 1 read that Evelyn Arbogast, lately graduated from the Boston Conservatory, would, with her company, make her first appearance in Nevada City in a few days. I was sorry I cou'd not stay to hear her, for I understand she is one of the finest singers in America. It might alsointerest you to know that Eibert Veale, the famous violinist, is leading her orchestra. The new Nevada City High School is certainly a beautiful building. I spent some time in walking through the halls, and at last summoned up enough courage to enter one of the rooms numbered “301.” It happened to be the Senior English room, and imagine my surprise when I recognized Jenny Sharp as the teacher. I spent some time in her room, and later visited the Junior Math. room, where Leonard Schroeder is teaching. : On my way back to the hotel I boarded a downtown. car, and while quietly reading in one corner a man entered and sat down beside me. I paid no attention to him until he called me by name, and then I recognized Leonard Kahl, president of the Nevada City Stree Railroad Co. Kahl looks prosperous and weighs about 240 pounds, as a successful magnate should. That night as I was going through the hall of the hotel, on the way to my room, I fell over a bird cage outside a door. The bird that occupied the cage happened to be a parrot, which upbraided me terribly for my awkwardness. I was about to pass on when a lady came to the door. She was carrying a cat and a small monkey, and began anxiously to inquire of “Polly” if she was hurt. I thought her voice sounded familiar, and looking up I beheld Clara Maltiman. Poor.
