38 ' THE QVILL
team made a good showing, and in spite of the small hall, defeated them
with a score of 21-16.

On Friday night, February 18, our team met Grass Valley High,
at Armory Hall. Grass Valley put up a strong fight from start to
finish and at times it looked as though they would carry off the victory.
The first half ended in their favor, 11-9. In the second half our
team played a better game, making five baskets to Grass Valley's four.
The features of the game were the basket shooting by Young and
the foul throwing by Hampton.

On February 18 we played the second game of the series at
Grass Valley. The Grass Valley team had lost all the ginger displayed at the previous game and our team had an easy time from start
to finish. Our victory was a sorrowful surprise to Grass Valley, as
they had had a better opinion of themselves than the score indicated.
Tennis.
Until this season very little interest has been shown in Nevada
High toward tennis. Last year a court was laid out in the corner of
the school yard and a few games played, but little headway was made
before school closed for the summer months. This year the court
was repaired early in April, and practice started immediately. There
is an abundance of good material in the school tennis club, and we
have high hopes for success in future years. If properly supported,
tennis should become one of the leading activities in N. C. H. S.
The first contest with students of another school was played
with Grass Valley on May 7. Forreasons known to the faculty and
the Nevada students, as well as the Grass Valley representatives, the
games were unofficial. Although we were defeated in both doubles and
singles, the results were not discouraging. The Grass Valley men
were experienced players, three of whom had won honors in other
tournaments. The students who participated in this tournament were
Johnson, Colley, Richards, Simmons, McGrath and Searls.
