30 THE QUILL
“Prepare your Latin every night,
Slight not Geometry,
Be always prompt with all reports,
And cube (a—D) ;
“While studying, concentrate your thoughts,
Cram not for any test
What e’er you Jearn you’ll need for aye
So try to do your best;
“Bear well in mind my friendly words,
Laugh not at my advice,
You’ll find it helpful in your work,
So please be kind and nice.’’
Silent was each and every one—
As quiet as a mouse—
And during this great silence,
The wood nymph left the house.
Next year, a new school we’ll attend;
Should we follow this advice,
To students, ’t would be far from fun,
To teachers—Paradise.
W. D. Coughlan,
Prize Poem.
