86 THE QUILL “*T say, Silas,’ ’’ cried Tom, ‘‘there’s some one up at your ae salling you.’’? Silas released Bones, who scrambled over the fence, while Silas set out for the house, shouting vengeance as he went. The boys went up to Bently’s and talked it over with My. Bently. The last words Bones said were, ‘‘Who’s going to do the cooking Dan?” ‘*Wait and see,’’ said Dan. : The last week of school dragged by and the boys set out on their journey, Bones carefully carrying a box of lunch, while Tom as carefully looked after his gun. They arrived at U nce Ben’s about dusk, ate a good supper and went to bed: A week of hunting and fishing passed. On Monday it rained ‘‘eats and dogs,’’? as Dan said, and the boys, Dan, Tom and Bones were seated about the fireplace munching nuts. Suddenly Tom sprang up and ran across the room to a corner of the room.’ ‘‘Oh! Dan, did you ever see this drawer before? It must be one of your uncle’s queer notions. It won’t open either.’ ‘‘Let’s call in Mrs. Sears and ask her what’s in it,’’? said Dan. So Tom went out to the kitchen and brought in Mrs. Sears. ‘Where is the key to this drawer, Mrs. Sears??? asked Dan. ‘Is there anything good to eat in it? ?’? asked Bones. “Law! Master Dan there ain’t no key to that drawer. No, Bones, nere ain’t nothin’ to eat there either, leastwise that I knows of. Well, 1 guess I might as well tell you all about it. One day as I was setting here by this corner sewing, Uncle Ben came down stairs with a box under his arm. ‘It’s time you were getting my supper, Mandy,’ said he. ‘All right,’ says I and I goes to the kitchen. T always made it a point to humor Uncle Ben, you know. Later when I was looking out of the window I saw him iar something out into the garden. As I could never open this drawer . supposed it was the key to it. Now I must go back to the kitchen. I wouldn’t go too near it, though, I’m afraid it contains something dangerous,’’ she continued as she went out of the room.
