we fF THE QUILL 49 GIRLS’ ATHLETICS The basket ball season opened with a meeting called by coach Esther MacDonald, in the latter part of September. Mildred MacDonald was unanimously elected Captain while Phillis Chapman was elected manager, running against Edna Maguire and Margaret Peard. Arrangements were made for practice in Armory Hall, and practice began a week later. Good material turned out and all of the twenty-four girls tried their best to work up for the first team. Shortly after the beginning of the season, the showers for both boys and girls. were installed. A little later the girls were able to raise a hundred dollars from the luncheon they had served during Teacher’s! Institute, This money helped pay for the improvements upon the hall and enabled the girls to purchase new jerseys. Grass Valley 4——Nevada City 2 The first game of the season was played on the Nevada High school court, between the Grass Valley girls and the Nevada girls. The game was a nine court one, and the first the Nevada City girls had ever played, The girls soon kot nsed to the small courts and played with much spirit. At the end of the second half the score stood 2-2. An extensicn of time was grarted by Miss Van Hagan, state Physical director, who refereed the game. Grass Valley. made. the lucky basket, winning by a score of two points. Seniors 9 ——AIl Stars 18 [In order to raise funds for the Benevolent Society a game was played on November 24, between the Seniors of the Nevada City High School and the All Stars of the same school. The game was hotly contested and the score at the end of the first half showed the All Stars to be far in the lead. The game was forfeited by the Seniors shortly after the beginning of the second half, because Mildred MacDonald fell and severly sprained her ankle, Basket Ball season was Suspended for scme time after this in order to give ‘Pill’ time to get over the sprain, G, V. Fresh.-Soph. ——N. C. Fresh.-Soph, The Freshmen-Sophomore girls organized a team during November, MarBaret Peard and Helen Calanan being elected captain and Manager respectively. They accepted the G. V. Girls’ challenge to play a game in Grass Valley and it Was a dandy game. The N. C. girls lost to the G. V. team, The game was to be for the Freshmen-Sophomores alone although G. V. entered some of their Upper classmen. The Freshmen-Sophomore girls played several games with picked teams and with the Grammar School, winning from the latter.
