As Glenbrook Basin developed, and septic tanks drained into the lake. In the early 1960s
there were hopes to build a youth center there but water too polluted.
Transportation Museum Division of NCHS produced a map showing racetrack (basically
encompassing both freeway on/off ramps with Brunswick bisecting it and the Union building
within the souther loop. 1884-1933; and Olympia Park 1902-1958. the Narrow Gauge is to the
ne a considerable distance.
a) One mile racetrack, 40’ wide, guardrail fences, first grandstand 1884. Night horseracing
under electric lights first run in CA here 1887; b) Two story, 250’ grandsand, judges tower across
track, stables rear as in 1924 c) OP and LO, dining bar, porch, boat dock, footbridge to 60’ X
100’, dance pavion spring floor 1924. Rebuilt 1950. d) bath house 100’ long adjacent to beach
with diving boards, and diving trapeze tower e) swimming pool f) Dam Rental cabins, etc, tables
on flat above lake after 1924. Pines infested had to be removed. 13: Glenbrook siding on
NCNGRR for excursion trains, forsedrawn rigs to racetack. after 1901 boardwalk from carline

Glen Jones local historian says northern part called “Glenwood” and se Glenbrook, formerly
Ishmert’s Grove. Dairy and racetrack called Glenbrook, until 1955 expansion of Brunswick
Road. GV resident Jack Clark worked at the Glenbrook Dairy owned by Earl Sutton when he
was in highschool. Sutton home was near the top of Sutton Way and the barn where the fwy is
now. The racetrack was south of the dairy: offering recreation for miners, walkable distance from
both cities. Whcoff wrote a [Feb/267]2001 history feature in the Union saying the electrification
night on Sept. 8, 1887 was attended by 500 racing fans cheering Flora B to victory over Hector
and Jimmer. Fairground events may have been held in the middle of the racetack Ishmert's
Grove was south of the trak said Seck. In 1899, worker built a dam near Plaza Road and Sutton
way.

Malcolm Hamill, surface manager for I-M mines owned land/ranch to south of LO (VS worked
for him, a big man in NC, John Wayne stance. Water drained from Glenbrook (the Glen-brook)
into LO from NW and out again to sourth through the Hamell property and pasture. Nevada
