Coast to Coast by Railroad
United States entirely by rail. He made the return trip to New York two
weeks later, and in August took his family back by railroad to live in
Nevada City.
Niles Searls described his journey in a series of letters to his
wife Mary (nicknamed “May’”) who had remained in Butternuts
with the two boys. Their descendants saved these letters, and many
other family papers, which are now in the possession of the present editor, Mrs. Frances Long.
Niles Searls died in 1907 and Mary in 1909. Both are buried
in Greenwood Cemetery, Nevada City, California.
