Homey Becs Imported via Panama.—
We learn from the California Farmer
that there have been thirteen impo:
and amounting to nine-hundred and fifty-six hives of which only two hundred
and eight hives have reached here with
live bees.
“We are convinced that itis far better
to pay our own apiarists $100 each, than
it isto pay $7 50 for them in New York,
These raised here are healthy, while in
those imported, the chauces are five to
one against them. Several parties have
started with fifty hives, and only five,
eight or ten would reach here, and those
sickly. Hereafter buy California raised
bees—they arethe bestand the cleapPan

A New Discovery.—A German wri

such a scarcity of thieves in England,
that they are obliged to offer a reward
for theirs discovery,
Improving.—lInformation has been
received at Washington from the Hon.
Charles Sumner that his health is much
improved, and that he will return early
in the spring, He willbe present to occupy his seat in the Ssuate at the extra
session.
The Amsterdamsche Courant <f October 6, 1858, inserts the following lefter from Captain L. Byl, of the Dutch
barque Hendrik Ido Ambacht : “Sailingin the Seuth Atlantic, in 27 deg. 27
min. N. lat. 14 deg. 51 min. E. long. we
pereeived, on July the 9th, between 12
and 1 o’clock inthe afternoon, a dangeroussea monster, which, during nine
days, constantly kept alongside of us to
37 deg. 55 min S. lat and 42 deg.9 min.
E. long. This animal was about ninety
feet long and twenty-five to thirty feet
broad, and most of the time it struck the
ship with such a force as to make it vibrate. The monster blew much water,
which spread an unpleasant stench over
thedeck. The captain, fearing lest the
animal might disable the rudder, did his
utmost to get rid of his fearful antagonist, but without success. After it had
reeeived more than a hundred musket
balls, a harpoon, and long iron bar,
blood was seen to flow from various
wounds, so that at last, from loss of
strength, the monster could swim behind our vessel uo longer, and we were
delivered of it. By its violent blows
against the copper, the animal’s skin
had been damaged in several places.’
A Sagacious Dog.—-Not long since,
week, a drove ot hogs were passing
through Montgomery street. General
atic. ion was attracted to the sagacious
management displayed by a fine large
dog, who assumed the guidance of the
drove and kept them together amone the
noise of omnibus, cart, dray and catiia_:
wheels, which about that time made
affairs rather mixed in that fashionable
thoroughfare. If any member of the
porcine fraternity manifested an erratic
tendeney—shonting off from the main
body and threatning to invade the sanc
tity of the sidewalk, the dog would
scamper around to that side, and ty dint
of teeth and savage growling, drive the
bolting member back again. His eyes
were everywhere: he rushed about here
and there, and completely bore away
the palm from his master as pig driver.
Probably the animal had been brought
up to tend sheep.—S, F. Times.

CLOB HOUSE GIN,
TO THE PUBLIC.
ZS This celebrated Gin—pretending to nothing
but what it is, viz : a pure snd unadulterated arti.
ticle, and assuming no artificial merits of what it is
not, as some of its rival imitators do—after five
years of public approva! and very extensive sales
in California, has been pronounced by the public to
be superior, not only as a beverage of general use,
to any other article competing against it, but is
Unrivalled in its Medical Efficiency
in most cases of complaints. To persons travelling
in these days ofrapidtransit from East to West,
North te South; who are constantly changing their
water as well their climate; who are drinking, indeed, a dozen kinds of water in every twenty-four
hours, and each draught containing some property
acting in chemical antagouism to the preceding one
thereby causing an unnatural degree of excitement
to the stomach—it is positively and absolutely necessary to use acounteracting agent. From the fact
that the
“London Club House Gin,”
is prepared expressly to meet such exigencies, and
to act as we know it will act, as att antidote we confidently prescribe it asthe very best article in the
country. The name of “Aromatic Scheidam

this article. In first presenting the
“London Club House Gin,”
to the public, my aim was to give them a pure and

ComPLIMENTARY REsoLvTIONs.—-At the Close of a
course of ten lectures on Phrenologs aud Physiology by
Dr. Barlow J. Smith, at the Hygeio Medical College, N
Y. the following resolutions were unanimously adopted
by the medical class, with the reqrest for their publica
tion in the Phrenological and Water Cure Journals ;
Whereas, We have listened with pleasure and profit to
a course of lectures by our fellow student. Dr. B. J. Smith
on Phrenology and Physiology, and as we deem the sei
ence of Phrenology as connected with Physiology, of the
utimnest importance, therefore,
Resolved. Thatin Dr. Sinith we recognize 2 teacher of
whoin this Collcge may weil be proud, and that he is ca
pable of reflecting hcnor upon the sciences he so &biy
demonstrates.
Resojved, That his discoveries in Physiology elaim
our highest attention and regard as reformers and students of nature.
Resolved, That we highly appreciate Dr. Smith's afplication of Phrerolozy to the study and diagnosis of discase ; and thatas students of medicine we have derived principles of diagnosis which are of inestimable valne
being enabled to determine, from an exe tion of the
hea t,to what particular discase a person is preposed.
Resolved, That as the principles of Fhreno by
which Dr. Smith determines the healthy or diseased
condition of the body are original, net having been
claimed of set fotth by any other individual, he deserves
great credit fer their discovery.
Resoived, That as Dr. Sinith intends to leave our institution soon for a permanent residence in California,

Homeopathy or Mcvement cure.—Of Motorprathy, itis only necessary to say here that Peter Henry
Ling, the originator of this system Was @ Swede, and t
his system has been practised in Sweden in an institu.
ion sustained by Government, for nearly forty years,
and that it has received the highest commendations from
several governments, commissions of inquiry, and phy
sicians Of the highest standing
Bayard Taylor who was treated in the institution st
Stockbohn, thus speaks ofit: “Ling’s system not only
aims at reducing to a:cienace the muscular development
cf the body, but by means of both active and pasrive
movements, at reaching the scat of the disease and
stimulating the various organs of the body ina healthy
action In the former ofthese, Ling has certainly succeeded ; there isno other system of muscular training
that will bear comparison with his. During the time of
my attendance I could not he!p but notice the effect of
Tediscipline upon the patients, especially the children.
yeth weak and Ilstless gradually strengthened themselves ; the pale and sallow took color and lively expression ; the erippied and paralytic recovered the use of
their limbs—in short, all with the few exception cf a few
hypocondriaes, exhibited very marked improvement,—
‘There was no volutitary exercise, e vody was being
exercised upon. ‘The result of my observations and experlence was that Ling’s system of physical education
is undoubtedly the best 1n the world, and that as a remedial agent in ail cases of congenital weakness or deformity, as well as for those diseas s which arise from deraaged circulation, its value can scarcely be over-estimated,”
‘There are several institutions in the United States established upun this system, of which we will mention that
of Charles F. Taylor, M. D. in New York city, the celebraced institution of Dr. Hamilton, of Kochester, N. Y.
(exclusively for women) and that of Dr. Haisted, at
Round Hill, Northampten, Mass,
HYDROPATHY;
The snecess aud advantages of Hydropathy over the
old system of poisonous drug meslication are well known
Inthe use of Water, Dr. Smith does not rely upon Cold
water alone. but upon water of all temperatures, according to the strength of the patient and the nature of
the disease, in connection with all other hygienic conditions, such as Air, Electricity, Diet, Rest, Fxercise,
ete Neither doeshe believe water will ‘‘wash out ali
diseases,” a8 some Allopaths are ignorant or malicions
enongh to charge upon Hydropathiste; but a® water enters more largely into the constituents of the boly than
all other elements combined—the new born infant being
coimposed of about NINETY per cent. of water, the adult
of about EIGHTY per cent, and as water forme about
N.NETY ports of one hundred of the blood, the fluii
which supplies every part with its vitality—consequently the human system has more effinity with water and
yields more readily to its influence than to any and ali
other elements known to the materia medica. Those who
have seenits power and given it a fair trial never go
BACK todrugs. Wherever there is disease, there is generally inflammation, and what will absorb heat so readily aud surely as water? You who are sick, ask yourselves ifthere CAN be any affinity betweeu your systems
and poisonous drugs. Atew years since there was not
an advocate of Hydropathy, now there are hundreds of
thousands in the United States and eae to testify in
itsbebalt. Tay 17 and you will bless the day.
